'The Curve'

'The Curve' finished... a bit of trouble photographing the colors!

..a bit of trouble photographing these colors, colors may vary due to your monitor settings.

...photos posted below are 'in progress'... click on any of the images to view full screen... 'The Curve' is available with at my DPW site

                                            'THE CURVE'
24 inch oil on gallery wrap canvas 1 and 1/2 inches deep ready to hang complete with backer wire and professional varnish, no need to frame.

Adrift...

The process that I like to use most when painting is a bit like drifting at sea... I have my paddle and oars, and a sense of direction, getting to the island is another story.

I don't mind throwing in an experiment every now and again, to see where it takes me... in fact, that is what I love most about painting.  I can stay right in my studio and make the sun shine, or not.

One of the things that bother most about painting is the lack of satisfaction.  While I am painting I am completely taken by the lull of the waves, but quickly this feeling comes to a crashing end when I am finished with the piece.

I don't quite understand it all yet, but somehow the paintings seem to connect with my feelings.  It is almost as though I wouldn't need to use words to express myself, but still I do, so that I can figure out what it was that kid inside was trying to say.

The Inspirational Duckface.....

... While admiring some masterworks of previous years I couldn't help but take notice that several of these lovely portraiture style works seemed to be of seated women crafting a needle work piece or some such 'hobby' of the time.   I had to then wonder, what is it that we do today, that wasn't a passion of the past.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist (I am not a rocket scientist)- to figure out that computers have taken hold of generations today.   Most non-rocket scientists who have surfed the net may also take note of the method that the generation today uses the internet to make connections for social purpose.  One seems to be by taking 'plumped up' photos of oneself while standing in front of a mirror- (some define this as duck face) or perhaps a friend will take a photo so you can share the great time you had with anyone else who happens to bump into your picture on the net.

The rocket scientist who might occasionally browse my blog would know I love to paint faces.  That said, chances are good they might have to be an artist to understand exactly how the process of  inspiration works.  I really shouldn't assume that a scientist might be on another plain than an artist, just making an uneducated, but somewhat experienced guess.

The easiest way to explain how inspiration works for me would be to tell you what I can't do.

I am sure you have all heard similar expression such as 'creating from the soul', right?
Every once in a great while I get this hair brained idea to try something different, maybe abstract, or a folk painting (which I have did a fair amount of  in the past) ....  Have you ever tried to get lemonade from a cow?  It just doesn't work!

To make a long story shorter, the rocket scientist who realizes that I love to paint faces, would then put two and two together and understand why I might be inspired to paint 'duck faces'.   Hmmm.... sort of like someone who has lived on the plains of North Dakota... and gets the chance of a lifetime to see where the rolling hills take them.

Defiantly Green ...... Backers Update link

It just felt right to name this piece Defiantly Green- and yes, it is a bit personal.

Have you ever experienced a moment like you have hit one of those bumps and havn't landed yet.. all in slow motion....ready to start rolling and then thunk... the stars come, lights go out... start flickering and then the answer stares down in your face.... dangled from the arms of an angel?  I am there.  The feeling is so strong that I hesitate to share the moment because I am not sure that is a moment anyone wants to share.  To work thru these bumps I try remind myself savor the sweets ... and am happy with the result of the painting.

BACKERS -  a link to a overdue post....... message me if you need the pass code .  Thank you for your patience as I work these bugs out.    Also.. if you contributed without using the kick starter site... contact me and I will forward you the code.

...A Sailor Man.....

(click on photo to zoom )

I was a bit bored the other day... having a bit of a block... so I decided to monkey a bit with some acrylic paints that I have at home.....  often as it does happen, my 12 yr old son was a bit bored too.... So I gave him one of my old partially painted canvas's ... which he could then paint over.

The thing that most excited me... (I only took a photo with my phone... the blue doesn't look quite so brilliant in person) .... was the similarities in method of creating.

First he started layering some blue on the canvas.... and then some red... and some yellow... and before I knew it... he had a sailor man.     The process part that I am relating to is the unplanned portion... often I want to just start painting and see what comes out... which is exactly what he did.

Now I know Matt always likes to find a way or two to make a few extra bucks and would love to create to sell... but between you and I... I may have to buy it myself ...although mothers day is coming(hint, hint- maybe he will see this post)...  there is something about this painting that really hits my spark... and the part that irritates me is, I can't quite explain what that is.

(will update with better photos later)

Week one... Scottsdale

....One week down, one left to go...
I am having a bit of trouble doing any postings- as I am working with an ipad rather than my laptop. In no particular order ...(I am not able to rearrange / delete any pictures...and had to have my daughter post the pitures to my blog) ... are pictures from my first enjoyable week at the Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona.

Several of the photos are demos in progress by Kobayahsi as well as some finished works of his. There are also a few photos taken at the wonderful home of an art collector.

Each class day starts at 10 am with a demonstration that runs until around noon. After lunch the students paint with live models ... (some are shown below)... class time ends at 5 pm.

The hotel that I am staying at is directly across the street from the school, an easy walk.

I am not sure how many galleries there are in Scottsdale... it seems to be an endless amount. I am quite sure I will not make it to all of them. The highlights of my gallery hopping today included wonderful Russian and Ukraine artworks, Renoir works (both drawining and sculpture)... original Picasso works.. (and was tempted to bring one home at 1.5 million,... just not too sure where I would put it... darn, had to leave it there.) I also got to see many Warhol and Rockwell artist proofs, which were fun to see.

Temperatures have been in the high 80's to low 90's... not as muggy as back home... The weather has been wearing me out a bit... as I am a bit forgetful to fill up on water.

I am looking forward to continuing my studies next week, though I am getting anxious to get home and try evolve my work a bit and put some new ideas that I want to try to the test. I will have to save that for another week or so.

p.s..... had to share the photo with the 'robes'... as I seem to remember them in some of Milts work... they were fun to see and recognize.

Scottsdale Artists School...Kobayashi

After somewhat turbulent ride, arrival at the Skyharbor airport was a bit of a relief.
I got in at Homestead Studio Suites at 10:45 pm ... and was glad that I had stuffed a bag of English muffins and peanutbutter in my bag....

I am enjoying my room, though not a 'plush' stay, it is sufficient and practical.... newly remodeled, it has everything that I need.... a small kitchen, dressers...wifi... good shower etc.... the pool is on the warm side.

A plus of staying at Homestead in Scottsdale is location. Walgreens is across the parking lot, (as well as a few restaraunts) and the school is literally across the street.

Class started at 10 am,...the school is beautiful and I can't wait to share phictures but first I have to figure out how to post them as I am using an ipad.

After introductions of roughly 15 students, watching Milt do a demo was an anticipated treat. He makes it look very easy.

After the demo, two models were set up on each side of the class room where we were able to paint and get tips from the instructor.

Open studio is on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and most of Saturday. I did take advantage of the open time, and was able to paint with another live Model... did a quick small painting.

Aside from the bed being abit on the hardside... I really can't complain. It has been a great experience.

Humble Pie & Celebration Of Arts......

This past week the Five Wings Arts Council held the first of what I assume will be an annual event with great success and rightfully titled the 'Celebration of Arts'.

The celebration began with a social and processioned with a wonderful dinner and was held at the Prairie Bay Restaurant in Baxter, MN.

Amidst the attendance numbers of 150 was a few featured guests. The Executive Director of the Minnesota State Arts Director, Sue Gens. The Director of Arts Programs from the McKnight Foundation, Vickie Benson, and the Executive Director from the Minnesota Citizens For The Arts, Sheila Smith. I was fortunate to have reserved seating with these ladies that play a very important roll in the arts, and very much enjoyed their company thru the event.

The event held an entertainment of vocal performances, followed by an onslaught of well deserved awards with applause to those who have played their part. The beautiful awards were created by artist in Pine River, Minnesota and went to support in the following areas. Community Arts Leadership Awards, Distinguished Arts Organization of the Year Award, Arts Advocacy Award, Past FWAC Board Service Awards, and the Student Artist Grant Recipients. Also beautifully created by a local artist, the impressive Master Nominee Awards and the Guilded Feather Award.

I had chose to hope that I wouldn't be put in a position to sweat profusely and humiliate myself by giving a speech, and rather than preparing one ahead, I had to deliver on the spot.

The accomplished presentations by the featured guests thru out the event were entertaining and put me in some sort of a mood. The sort of mood that makes an artist grateful to be touched by the warmth and caring support in every form.

I wish you had been there, so you could have heard. Not that the 'on the spot speech' was a revelation, but because I want you to know. (and I really need to add a few more )...

The beginning of an attempt went something like this.... after getting a bit accustomed to the microphone...

"I wasn't planning to say anything, but as I sat, listening as the awards were handed out, I began to understand a bit what it feels like to be a celebrity. Not that I think I am a celebrity, but, because I understand why they would cry. So with that I would thank all those previously mentioned tonight, in their part they have played. Mark, Vicki, the McKnights Foundation, for help along the way...."

As I drove away, I understood what it then felt like to be a bit of a celebrity who had forgot to mention some very important names, which is why I wanted to create this post in the first place.

Some of the following were remembered publicly, however, I want to mention them again.

My parents... you are the first on my list, who, when I think of whom to be grateful, and my family... for continued support and encouragement. Thank you for always being you.

For those who have pulled from their pocket to put in mine, large and small amounts, thank you ever so much. It is your support that enables me to continue living and working toward my goal.

For those who have supported the arts in ways of appreciation and acknowledgement and community events. Thank you for caring, and giving the arts recognition.

The FWAC, Mark, Vicki, Nancy.... past and present board members, and the Mcknight Foundation... For your hard work and the grants I have received along the way.... I only dare take a lid off of what your assistance has done... Thank you !

The States Arts Board, for constant improvements, and giving me reasons to dream of grants that would help me achieve the steps along the way.

The Minnesota Citizens For The Arts, for your dedication and hard work.

The First National Bank of Menahga & Sebeka, as well as the Cottage House, for sharing often, your public space.

To the Kurtti's for continued support. An attempt to express my appreciation would be understated. Thank you.

There are so many more, that play their part. The hard work of curators, support systems, and effort of galleries. Artists who have openly shared and know what it is like to have 'been there', and who 'are there'.

Last, but not least, a personal favorite and good friend, Artist Raymond Wattenhoffer, and another artist, who I regretfully did not mention publicly, Nancy Leaseman, who I appreciated often during her employment at the FWAC.

I also shared upcoming information, such as my attendance at the Scottsdale Artists School with artist Milt Kobayashi... (I will be leaving the 1st of April and fly back on the 16th)
The subject of leaving UGallery was lightly touched, with the intention of continued purpose and meaning towards the Guilded Feather Award.

Desert was not humble pie, though it well could have been, as my 'speech' had slated for last.

* I will be updating this post with the artists names and links for their work next week*

Conceptual Provenance...

Some might wonder what these words mean to me... simply nothing more than visionary inspiration....

Somewhat sadly, I have decided to leave Ugallery (aside from Paperworks, you can purchase 'Discerning Prudence' ...shown in the AAF photos... here ).... shifting gears while repositioning myself to continue working toward my goals.

Working with Ugallery has been a great experience. I was fortunate to send work for the AAF in NY, as well as successfully manage to sell 30 pieces in not much over a year.... shipping to within the USA, Australia, Singapore, and Great Britain.

Although saying goodbye is difficult, I am happy to say that working with the team has been personable and with outstretched friendships that I will not forget. I can only hope that our paths again will cross in a grandeur way.

The following photos are entered as a method of recording for those that may be interested, and remembering some of the steps along the way.

Looking forward, I will soon be studying at the Scottsdale School of Arts with Milt Kobayashi... as well as checking out the art scene.... I just may float... ;)

I am very excited to soon send Stoneheart Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado (currently being updated) select works created after my class with Milt Kobayashi in Scottsdale, AZ. Originals can also be purchased at DailyPaintworks and with Xanadu in Scottsdale, AZ.

In appreciation towards the support that I have received over the last few years I have decided to try out a fun auction service on DPW.... I will be starting auctions for small 6 inch size pieces at a grabbing price that you might not want to refuse. 'Best Dress' is currently up for auction.... you can view the piece here. * please note that the pieces up for auction will be no larger than 8 inches square and will not be available thru retail galleries, although I may enter a few extras in larger size just until I go to the workshop.

'Geratude'

'Geratude' just might have a teeny tiny bit of an attitude, from the looks.

I had worked on this 24 inch oil on gallery wrap a few days ago and decided to go finish up before the snow broke loose... really wasn't quite expecting this broad to show up...but she did.

Sometimes I just have to go with what comes because that is how I like to paint. I would rather the brush tell me where to let it drip than having to think about what masterly plan I should try to follow.

I might not always like the end results, but when it feels right, it feels right. This piece should be available towards Thursday on Ugallery unless a purchase is made prior..... Gerty, I am not sure what to expect of her... she could be here for a stay or take off in a bolt. She kind of has her own attitude that way. (Click on the picture to view full screen)

Very wet and still on the easel...

..Just thought I would share a picture taken with my cell phone.. (sorry) ... of a new 24 inch oil on gallery wrap canvas....

I decided to stop in the studio this afternoon as I finished my errands... and out she came.... but not quite all the way. (seeing some changes that need to be made before completion!)

Hopefully it will be less painful than on the delivery table . Although... if someone wants to give me an epidural or some safe but very relaxing drugs.. I may take you up on that ;)

One thing is for sure, it won't even come close to comparing the precious outcome of those that give their first cry out in to the world.

(click on the image to zoom) .. p.s ... always love to hear those title thoughts floating about :)
